Both industrial SD cards and industrial SSDs are built for reliability, but their physical formats, interfaces, and application niches differ. Selecting the right one requires understanding these distinctions.
1. Form Factor and Physical Integration
Industrial SD Card: Removable, compact (typical dimensions 32mm x 24mm x 2.1mm), and designed for standardized SD slots. Ideal for systems where field replacement is expected, such as data loggers, portable instruments, and embedded boards.
Industrial SSD: Usually a fixed 2.5-inch, M.2, or mSATA module that mounts internally. Suited for servers, edge gateways, and industrial PCs where higher capacity (up to several terabytes) is needed.
2. Performance Characteristics
SSD: Higher sequential read/write speeds (up to 550MB/s for SATA, 3,500MB/s for NVMe). Better supports multi-threaded workloads and large data transfers.
SD Card: Lower power consumption (active current often under 150mA) and simpler system integration. Speed is limited to UHS-I (up to 104MB/s) or UHS-II (up to 312MB/s), sufficient for logging and media storage but not for high-performance computing.
3. Reliability Features Overlap
Both industrial families offer wide temperature support, power-loss protection, wear leveling, and security features. The reliability difference between form factors is minimal when both are built to industrial standards.
4. Decision Guidelines
Choose industrial SD card when:
The device has a standard SD slot.
You need removable storage for field serviceability.
Power budget is tight.
Choose industrial SSD when:
Capacity exceeds 256GB.
Performance beyond 150MB/s is required.
The system has dedicated M.2 or SATA connectivity.
In many complex systems, both coexist: an industrial SSD for the operating system and applications, and an industrial SD card for removable data logs or configuration backups.
