2025-11-13 10:41:53 DDR3 and DDR4 memory modules can be distinguished by the following aspects:
Appearance difference: The gold fingers of DDR4 memory are designed to be curved, which is different from the shape of the gold fingers of DDR3 memory. This means that DDR4 is no longer compatible with DDR3. If you want to use DDR4 memory, you must replace it with a motherboard that supports DDR4 memory.

2. Transmission rate and bandwidth: The transmission rate of DDR3 is between 800 MHz and 2133 MHz, while the starting frequency of DDR4 is 2133 MHz, which can reach up to 3200 MHz or even higher. DDR4 can provide 2Gbps of bandwidth per pin, while DDR3 has a lower bandwidth.
3. Operating voltage and power consumption: The operating voltage of DDR3 is usually 1.5V, while the operating voltage of DDR4 is often 1.2V or even lower. DDR4 has lower power consumption and less heat generation, which helps improve the stability of the memory module and reduce the frequency drop caused by heat generation.
4. Capacity difference: The maximum single capacity of DDR3 is 64GB, while the maximum single capacity of DDR4 can reach 128GB. DDR4 can provide larger memory capacity and support more applications.
5. Compatibility: DDR3 memory slots are usually not compatible with DDR2 or DDR slots, but can run at lower speeds and timing on compatible motherboards. And DDR4 memory needs to be replaced with a new platform that supports it.
